Accountant embezzles GHc115,882 nurses cash

An Accountant at the Western Regional Office of the Nurses and Midwifery Council has reportedly embezzled GHc115,882.00.

Gilbert Kwasi Mensah Addision, who used the money for his personal benefit reportedly forged pay-in slips to steal the money.

He told the police he used the money to build a garage, a living room and a store room, reports Graphic Online’s Mabel Aku Baneseh.

Addison, who was originally a staff of the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department was on secondment to the Nurses and Midwifery Council, when the incident occurred.

He allegedly failed to fully account for revenue collected on behalf of the council between May 2013 and December 2014.

The Registrar of the Nurses and Midwifery Council, Mr Felix Nyanteh, told the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament’s sitting in Accra on Wednesday that the matter had been reported to the police and action has been taken.

Docket

He told the committee the docket was currently with the Attorney-General for advice.

According to Mr Nyanteh, the culprit had also been dismissed by the CAGD.

It came to light when the head of internal audit at the Nurses and Midwifery Council detected the fraud.

The committee expressed worry over the delay in the prosecution of the culprit and expressed the hope action would be taken to bring him to book.
